TEZENIS & MAREVIVO

Together for Mediterranean Sea

Tezenis renews the special collaboration with Marevivo, the association that, since 1985, safeguards the sea and the environment.
The project ""Together for Mediterranean Sea"" aims to clean our sea from plastic waste to grant an increasingly plastic free future.

Our goals

Tezenis
  • The project involves 240 outings of the Garbage Group's 'Pelikan' eco-boats, which are used to collect 20 tonnes of plastic waste, equivalent to the weight of 2 MLN plastic bottles. The boats offer a daily cleaning service, and are made of aluminium and are able to collect solid and liquid waste thanks to a vacuum system.

  • The boats offer a daily cleaning service, and are made of aluminium and are able to collect solid and liquid waste thanks to a vacuum system.

  • In 2021, we collected more than 12 tonnes of waste and supported research into a new technology, the pyrolyser, which can dispose of waste by creating energy. Now this technology has become a reality.

  • Part of the collected waste was used as a sample for analysis at the Marche Polytechnic University to study its origin and prevent accumulation.

  • 91% of the waste collected in the cleaning operations so far is plastic waste, demonstrating the need to reduce the consumption of single-use plastic. This is why Tezenis has used 99 tonnes less of plastics in 2021 alone.

Did you know that?

  • More than 10 million tonnes of plastic are dumped into the sea every year, 80% of which comes from land and 20% from ships or from waste that fishermen lose or voluntarily throw into the sea.

  • The time it takes for plastic waste to degrade is extremely long: plastic bottles dating back to the 1960's have been found in the sea.

  • Thanks to the 'Pelikan boats' we will collect around 20 tonnes of plastic waste. In 2021, about 12 tonnes of waste was collected in 121 outings, of which 11,247 kg was plastic

  • The Mediterranean Sea is among the areas of the planet with the greatest biodiversity: it has over 17,000 species!

  • Not only plastics, but also oils are also extremely polluting. 1 litre of oil pollutes about 1 million litres of water. This is why Pelikan boats are equipped with a suction system for liquid waste.

  • The Mediterranean Sea has been called a 'plastic soup' because, despite covering 0.82% of the ocean's surface, it contains 7% of global marine microplastics.
