Cleaning up the Mediterranean Sea from rubbish

Raising public awareness
Through education and collective involvement, plastic pollution can be effectively combated and ecosystems protected for future generations
PLASTIC COLLECTION
Pelikan eco boat
Italian coasts will be patrolled with Pelikan boats to search for and recover waste in the most exposed areas such as ports (subject to maritime traffic) and river mouths, or small inlets that are more difficult to reach, where large quantities of debris tend to accumulate over time
Did you know?
Every day about 730 tonnes of plastic end up in the Mediterranean Sea, the equivalent of more than 50 lorries dumped in the sea. This plastic takes centuries to degrade, endangering the lives of thousands of marine species, many of which ingest or become trapped in the waste. In addition, microplastics enter our food chain, with tremendous consequences and risks to human health
ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION
Beach Days
Fourteen days of environmental education on the beaches will be organised to bring families closer to the sea and its secrets. Through engaging activities, participants will discover the wonders of marine animals and plants, raising awareness of the importance of protecting our sea and adopting more environmentally sustainable behaviour. These days offer an active experience thanks to playful educational trails, informative teaching materials and the use of natural elements
RESULTS FROM 2021
More than 32,000 kg of plastic collected, equivalent to more than 3 million plastic bottles diverted from the sea.
More than 740,000,000 square metres of sea surface patrolled by eco-boats during clean-up operations
